Video Description

In December 1932, the Polish Cipher Bureau first broke Germany's Enigma ciphers. Five weeks before the outbreak of World War II, on 25 July 1939, in Warsaw, the Polish Cipher Bureau gave Enigma-decryption techniques and equipment to French and British military intelligence. Thanks to this, during the war, Allied codebreakers were able to decrypt a vast number of messages that had been enciphered using the Enigma. The intelligence gleaned from this source, codenamed "Ultra" by the British, was a substantial aid to the Allied war effort.

if your enemy knows your every move then your're pretty much scr*w*d.
it's ignorant of the germans that they wheren't that paranoid about their encryption methods for intelligence.
had they spend a few bucks into new encryption methods and engines instead of bigger guns and bombs, they could have been much more of a threat eventually.

That proposition was extensively explored as sensible alternative history by D Downing in 'Moscow Option'. As initially implemented, Operation Barbarossa tasked 3 huge army groups to simultaneously strive for their respective targets whilst encircling Red Army forces in the process. German victory at Kiev was stunning (500k prisoners taken) but momentum to capture Leningrad and Moscow was lost. Diverting tanks from AGN + AGC took a terrible mechanical toll, to the chagrin of many Panzer generals

Hitler's mistake was not attacking Russia, but stopping Gadarien
s panza army and sending it south to encircle Kiev. If Hitler didn't interfere. Gaderian's tanks would have got to Moscow before the weather made it impossible and allowed the Luftwaffe to move up its bombers to bomb Russian industry that was placed pass the Ural mountains. It could have ended Russia's exsistance.

Not very fair. Why are people so resentful of any praise given to the British? I am a Yank and even I spot this ugly habit! The Polish and French accomplished much but the British made enormous contributions to the code breaking effort. Give the Limey's a break!

It must also have led to some very difficult decisions. Because of what was known but could not be acted upon because it might have led to the Germans finding out. Is it correct to assert that this was the reason for some of the city boming in the UK, for example Coventry? It was known about and could have been prevented?

For one because Churchill was not Prime Minister at the end of the war.

what a refreshing thread on utoob. This looks like a good source of info about Ultra. Never realised that the Poles had discovered it. The Poles certainly got little press during the war.

thank you both for mentioning Alan Turing, i was in high hopes of finding mention in these comments. it is indeed a tragedy that Lord Alan Turing was not properly honored and i hope we may help end such shames!

Alan Turing was evidently a genius whose contribution was decisive. Yet we should not make him into a romantic hero: In the early 1950s he was evidently asking for trouble. Homosexuality was against the law in Britain, and he should have thought twice before going to court when he was robbed a watch by a minion. Particularly after the defection of some magnificent gay members of the said British establishment to Stalin!

That's true. Yet from 1940 the Blechtley codebreakers faced challenges even more difficult than what the Polish and French intelligence had solved hitherto.
The handicap of being on the first line in a war...

Breaking Enigma objectively looking was a team work of Polish intelligence and French. Unfortunately both Pols and French didn't have enough time to fully implant benefits due to its secrecy and time limitations. Only Britain and America ware a full beneficial of Polish/French discovery.

Alan Turing was a patriotic genius. He probably did more for the war effort than any other single human being apart from Churchill himself. It is a deep shame that the British establishment treated him the way they did once he was no longer useful to them.

And that's exactly what happened. Bletchley was closed down as were many other top secret comms stations and nothing was said about it until the 1970's when the technology had moved on to the point of being useless to anyone but those interested in history. Thousands of people in the UK worked on this and similar projects, no one said anything, disclosed anything, bragged about. Even today the modern version of it is cloaked in secrecy - Happy to set the record straight

Not as simple as this list. All important but the moment the British Empire had a reason to declare war it was only a matter of when they were beaten not if. German factories could not out-pace Britains, did not have the natural resources available to the Empire and did not have Britain's reserves of manpower. Read Britains' War Machine. The Italians were five years away from readiness. Germany was not mechanized and Blitzkreig whilst effective was exposed by the Russians. Hitler miscalculated!

The story is true although Hollywood, much to British annoyance, has claimed it was an American destroyer. The story of enigma, from start to finish is tangled and owes the genius outcome to various groups not least the Poles who smuggled an early example to Britain. Turing was one of the team along with a post office engineer (name escapes me) who gave us the finished article.
