I think there are some that are Snape fans because of Alan Rickmans fabulous performance from the first movie on (not just cause he turns out good) But believe it or not there are quite a few of us that liked Snape from the books first. I liked Snape from the first book. I was crushed in the 6th when he killed Dumbledore but held out hope that there would be some twist to it and I was right :)

Severus snape and Alan rickman are almost two different people...

J.K. Rowling didn't think Snape is a hero. He's a brave man, loyal to those who keep their promises, but cold and spiteful. I guess it's up to personal interpretation though. I love Snape as well but don't think he's a hero, and that's not a bad thing.

He was meant to be an anti hero. Harry Potter is meant to be typical hero archetype, Voldemort was to be the typical villain archetype, so Snape is that of the anti hero archetype.
