These chemicals dont stay underground. They come back to the surface through casing(metal pipe) which is surrounded by concrete walls. It flows back up along with the much sought after natural gas/crude oil, and is the disposed of/treated properly....

As a chemist, i'm sure you know about MSDS(material safety data sheet). Most of the chemicals are not as bad as people think. The use of ACID is prob the worst. Also these chemicals are separated from the drinking/water sources. And these chemicals are brought back up to surface along with the crude during the production process.

People do blow the environmental damage out of proportion. Nobody ever talks about what happens with the chemicals once pumped into the well. All the water and chemicals used get brought back up to surface along with with the crude! After Fracking is done, Coiled Tubing(what i do) usually goes in to drill out the plugs so the well can start producing. At that point, the pressure from fracking starts to force everything up which includes the chemicals.
