Video Description

I built this for about $200. It has an 8hp Briggs & Stratton vertical shaft engine salvaged from from a rusted out yard tractor, a 2 stage hydraulic pump from ebay, valve and hoses bought new from Northern Hydraulic, a small used gas can for a hydraulic reservoir, piston was found at a junkyard, and the frame is built from misc found scrap metal. This has been operable for 7+ years, stored outdoors, more than once I have had to clean the points in the engine to get it running after it sits for a year. The engine is old and tired but it splits most of what I feed it.

I'm building one now, it's not cheap. Course, anyone can go to TSC or Home Depot and buy one. I got good deals on my cylinder and I beam, but engine and pump plus valves add up.

could you do a video on how your hydraulic pump is hooked up to the motor!? and would this type of pump drive two hydraulic motors? or would i need to use a bigger hydraulic pump? i have a 12.5 hp b&s with a one in" shaft

Would love to be able to find parts to build myself one cheap. Problem is I don't have a welder, the money or the time.

"When I'm too old to swing a splitting maul anymore "
Do your body a big favor and get a splitter. If you can sell a few loads of firewood it will cover the cost of the log splitter and you will wish you had gotten one long ago.

That is an ingenious machine you have built there man. But, unless you work with machines that already have the motors and hydraulic jacks and all the metal sitting around somewhere I doubt if you'll get off as cheaply as you did. Excellent video and demonstration. When I'm too old to swing a splitting maul anymore I'll probably scrape some money together and just buy a new one but if I were you I'd throw a tarp over that thing when I wasn't using it. Shame to let it rust apart.

Just a suggestionand question. Why do most guys put the push block on the ram? You have to manhandle the blocks back to split again, just swap and put the splitting wedge on the ram and block on the beam, then you just have to roll the blocks if you put a little platform on the sides. This make for less pain and saves on painkillers. lol

yeah but 800 is still really cheap for a splitter right and he can always get a longer hydraulic cylinder from someplace like Northern Tool that sells all these sorts of parts... Sweet idea....

Very cool and great job. You can rebuild that motor for peanuts if you choose to. Really, other than food, there is no reason to buy anything new. I never do.

Great job! I just built a logsplitter using a lot of recycled materials and saved $600-$800 over a similar model from a retailer. I spent $500-$600 on hoses, fittings, valve, pump and cylinder, fluid, tires, trailer axle spindles and misc hardware. It's a lot more rewarding when you use it and remember what it took to get it running! Congrats on the DIY build!

The cycle time is determined by a combination of pump rate (gallons per minute) and piston bore the size. A 13GPM pump alone, would speed up the cycle somewhat, but would might require more HP from the engine. Just speaking from my experience - others will have their own opinion...

anything is useable.. One man junk is another man treasure.. Yes it is cheaper if parts is obtainable.. Around here getting a hold of I-beam is almost impossible

Hey, thanks for watching my video, I try to be resourceful with my projects... Engine was from a rusted out lawn tractor, cylinder and misc iron scrounged, pump came from ebay, valve and hoses were the only thing I bought NEW. If a person is going to buy all the parts new then it would be cheaper to buy a new log splitter. Recycling is great!
